An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats posed by Chinese cars, and staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in all cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

During a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret information while travelling in China-made vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The broader defence environment underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including transport usage to discussions practices.
