RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
